After a day off from running, I resumed today with the goal of...slowing down. Last time out I was running a lap in just over 2 minutes, which is way too fast for me to keep up for 3 miles, much less 1.
I walked a lap for my warm-up then thought I'd run to Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl," which is about 3.5 minutes long. I finished in about 2.5. Better, but not great. Then, while walking another lap I selected The Waiting's "Hands In The Air," which is about 7 minutes long. The intention was to run two laps in 7 minutes. After the first lap, I abandoned that plan and walked another lap. I ran another, but didn't time it and got frustrated with trying to run in rhythm with the music and breathe right and my left calf really hurt and blah blah blah...so I got really frustrated and walked another lap. As I was finishing, I thought, "I NEED to run one more. That way I'll have walked a mile and run a mile today." My left leg still really hurt, but I did it anyway.
And it was the best lap of the day. I left my iPod behind and just listened to my breathing and looked around and distracted myself. It seemed to work great. I probably could have run more, but felt successful (and needed to get home), so I called it a day. Walked a mile, ran a mile...not bad.
I forgot to mention that when I showed up there was a woman there already running. She was simultaneously inspiring and depressing. Let's say...she wasn't small, but she was making that track her B. Part of me was like, "She's doing it! And doing it awesomely! So can I!" The other part of me was like, "Ugh, I suck. She is literally running circles around me." But, I don't know her background or how long she's been at it or anything. So, I'll choose to be inspired
I think tomorrow is a cross training day, so I'll probably work my arms and abs and maybe shoot some hoops. Who knows. You will...tomorrow! Stupid.

i can't listen to music when i run. i count things--my breaths, my footfalls, how many footfalls per breath or vice versa, how many paces around the track...i got so tangled up in my numbers that sometimes i'm done before i even realize it. (but usually not. usually i am painfully aware of exactly how far i am going.)
ReplyDeleteyou can do this! =) go ryan!
