Jeepers creepers...I guess I'm doing this.

When I was in high school I joined the cross country team. Well, that's not entirely true. I went to the meeting to join the team and then I tried to run home. I didn't get very far. I quit. Then I joined track and ran the 100 meter dash. That was more my style.

I've never been able to run very far, but I've always been able to run really fast...for a very short amount of time. This fact is what scares me a little about running my first 5k (3.2 miles) at the end of August.

In an effort to get healthy and do something I've never done before, I'm joining my friends Chad and Steve and my wife, Julie, to get our run on. (If anybody else wants to do it with us, you're totally welcome to!)

Over the next two months I'll be chronicling my progress. If I buy new shoes or new shorts...you'll hear about it. If I puke after two miles? You'll know. If I run 10 miles on accident...yeah, that's not going to happen.

Right now I'm JUST starting. Like, I haven't run at ALL. I'm looking up training regimens and advice. I'm going to get out there this weekend for sure, though, and at least do something.

What's funny is that it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. It's three miles. I could walk that in under an hour probably. But running that far without stopping...that's a different story. Plus, as my friend Jaye would say, "You ARE a bit of a drama queen, Haack." Can't argue with facts.

So, we'll see what happens. Maybe I'll love it and it'll lead to bigger and better things. I kinda hope so.

Haack
