My First 2.25 Miles and Sam Makes a Great Play

I'm still a little stunned about this morning. Last week, when I ran two miles, I really ran one, walked a lap, then ran another one. Still a huge accomplishment for me, but not two miles straight.

So, this morning I was trying to figure out how to breakdown my 2.25. After walking my warm-up lap and stretching, I decided I was just going to keep going. Then the fun in my mind began.

This is how I explained it to Julie: "When I started, I broke it down into thirds. I was like, 'Ok, I'm finishing up lap 3, I'm a third of the way through.' Then after the next lap I was like, 'Ok, that's a mile. One more mile to go. And then another lap.' Around lap 6, I think I lost track, so I may have run 2.5 miles, but I'm pretty sure it was just 2.25. Then after lap 6 I reverted back to the 'thirds' mindset. 1 third to go. But, after lap 7, I was feeling it and was like, 'Two laps! Do this!' After lap 8, I was in full-on 'ONE MORE LAP!' mode. Then...it was over."

Good job...mind.

A couple things that were different about this run: First, it was early. 7:30am. Second, I wore my old Asics. They just seemed lighter, so I thought I'd give it a try. Not sure if it made a huge difference. Third, I used my iPod Shuffle instead of my iPod and that arm thing. I liked that better. And I had a 'soft encounter' with Josh and Chuck (Stuff You Should Know Podcast - Whale Sharks episode).

So, success feels good. Another big step for me to build on.

In other news, Sam had his second t-ball game today. He was AWESOME. The second inning he played the pitcher position and was eating ground balls for lunch. He'd gobble 'em up and throw to first, just like he should. Unfortunately, the first baseman was...a little less into it.

For instance, check this video out. The ball was smoked right at Sam and he used his chest to block it and threw it to first. Just a GREAT play for a 5 year old.

And here's Sam's team, with coaches and helpers (dads). I rocked the D.A.R.E. shirt. For the kids, of course.

Alright...that's enough. Great day so far...and it's not even 1pm!

  1. if it makes you feel better, your running-mind-fun is pretty much exactly my thought process every time i run. break it down into sixths/quarters/thirds/halves to chart progress...convert that to percentage done...count the number of paces or breaths per lap, compare to earlier and try to keep it consistent...and then you're so busy counting how far and how fast you're running that you've run the whole thing before you knew it. kind of. =)
